(Retro) A Blog Worthy Survey (Or A Survey Worthy Blog) - July 26, 2009

I snagged this one from a dude named Ted - I can't remember how I found it though. Probably on his blog. Now where did I find that blog? I don't know - it's been sitting around for a while waiting for me to get off my lazy ass and complete it. It's probably tag-worthy, but I don't play that. Do it if you want to do it (and if you do, let me know so I can see how you answered these questions.) Anyhow, here you go - my "blog-worthy survey" or is it a "survey worthy blog"? Enjoy...

-Doug

How many homes or apartments have you lived in your whole life (so far)?
Twenty is the count I've come up with (but I may have missed a place or two)

What is your all-time favorite movie and why?
"Clerks" still wins out on this questions because it is such familiar territory for me - I've said jokingly that it's my life on film and that's not far from the truth. It's well written, insightful and just funny as heck. And the scary thing is, I've worked in c-stores for close to 25 years - we really are like that...lol.

Name a book that you've read more than once and will probably read again. (any type of book, doesn't matter)
Most of my comics would fall into this category, but I'm expecting that you want a real book. How about "Notes to Myself" by Hugh Prather. A great friend (love to you, Theresa) gave me a copy close to twenty years ago and I still gain insight and wisdom from the book, even now. It's just Hugh Prather with thoughts, insights, and different ways of looking at life in general and it's an easy book to lose yourself in and enjoy. And I do.

What does DNA stand for?
- I haven't got a clue and don't really care, but I'll take a guess (make something up) - how about "Don't No Anything?"

How many states have you lived in or visited, and which ones?
Lived in Ohio, North Carolina, South Carolina, and for a very brief time, CT. I also used to stay in West Virginia with my dad during the summers when I was a kid.

Do you believe reality is subjective?
I believe our interpretation of reality is subjective - but reality is fixed....

On the bottom of a plastic milk jug, it has that little recycling symbol along with the letters HDPE stamped into the plastic. What does that mean?
Don't know - I think it had something to do with the grade of plastic and being recycable, but I don't know the details and have never really thought about it.

Did you get good grades in school?
I got good grades when I was interested in the class, but that varied from subject to subject and teacher to teacher. My report cards were always a mixture of A's & B's (for the subjects I liked) and F's (for the subjects that bored me and / or I didn't like the teacher much and their style of teaching). It confused the hell out of the school personal. The crazy thing about the grades, which always makes me laugh is that I flunked "creative writing". And anyone that knows me now - can you see the irony there? But my teacher was a radical, extremist Nazi who didn't want cretivity - she wanted total control and I was somewhat the rebellious student (surprise!) so we clashed frequently and she flunked me. Go figure. That bitch!!

Where is the Prime Meridian located?
Not sure, but I think the Atlantic Ocean??

Betty or Veronica? Betty definitely
- Veronica was always a bit of a fake, snooty bitch in my eyes. I hear she ended up having a baby for Reggie, but that might just be a rumor I'm starting. Who knows? : - P

Brady Bunch or Partridge Family?
Both were cheezy, but the Brady's were a little bit better and we got three very bad movies as a result (all of which I enjoyed a great deal) - all the Partridges gave us was Danny Bonaduce - and that's something that should never be forgiven..

Earth Wind & Fire or Kool & The Gang?
Both groups have made some great music, but just for being in the movie, "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heart's Club Band", which is one of my favorite cheezy rock-star movies, Earth Wind & Fire get the big time nod of approval more from me.

Without using a calculator, what are the square roots of 49, 81 and 121?
7, 9, and 11

How good are you at video games?
I was good back when I was younger - give me any machine and a roll of quarters and I would beat the machine and totally kick ass for hours. But I haven't played any videos in years now so I would probably suck ass.

Do you like camping, fishing or hunting?
I like camping (bonfires and beer are good), I love to fish (although that too is more for the company, the relaxation and the beer), and I'm not a big hunting buff. I appreciate animals and wildlife for their beauty and what they are and blowing them away with a rifle just doesn't seem like a good thing to me. Besides, the hunters killed Bambi's mother - HULK SMASH!!

Say you're buying something at a store, and you pay with a $5 bill, but the cashier gives you change for a $20. Do you give it back?
Yeah - I work as a cashier and we all make mistakes - I know how it feels to be on the other side of that register and screw up like that. So yeah, I'd give it back. (Unless the cashier was a total ass and I knew they were lowlife scum from personal experience - and then, all bets are off).

Have you ever been in a car accident? If so, were you driving and was it your fault?
I've been in a couple of 'em - and one was my fault - I couldn't see the oncoming traffic because of a 18-wheeler parked in in the middle of the road blocking the lane and thought I had enough room to make a turn - I didn't. Oops! The other wasn't my fault - I had to swerve to avoid hitting a man who turned left in front of me and ended up rolling my car twice. That wasn't nice at all.

Do you think there will ever be a cure for cancer?
Not for "cancer" as a whole (there are too many types) but I think treatments will improve and the survival rate and cure rate will improve over time.

Can you play any musical instruments? Which ones?
Nothing really well - I used to be able to play a harmonica, but I haven't touched one in years. I was OK with the little Casio keyboards that they used to make - but I was never quite sure what I was doing - just that it sounded good to me.

Did you ever attend Summer Camp?
I always spent my summers up in Ohio with my Dad and at my Grandma's house - I didn't need no summer camp.

Older television sets with a picture tube are often called CRT, as opposed to LCD. What do both of those terms stand for?
Don't have a clue on this one.

Have you ever been invited to do something with somebody, and you lied about already having plans right then because you didn't want to hang out with that person?
Guilty!!

Why do you think you did that? Why wouldn't you just politely decline and if they asked why, just say you didn't really feel like doing it and leave it at that?
Because I was shallow and insecure and didn't want to hurt their feelings...

Is this survey starting to freak you out a little bit?
nah

How old do you think you'll live to be?
I didn't expect to make it past 25 honestly, but I did - now, my next "big goal" is 67 - because that just seems like a good age to aim for..

What is your all-time favorite TV show, and what do you like about it?
Do I have to have an all-time favorite? I like several shows, but most of 'em had good seasons where it was "can't miss" and then bad seasons that were "must miss" - nothing stands out for me as just total awesomeness. I'll go with Match Game (the game show) because even after thirty years of watching the same episodes, it still makes me smile.

Do you have any phobias? (Defined as an “unnatural fear” of something.)
Spider-crickets (they're evil), public speaking, crowds, pyscho pygmy's (Connie), and daylight (I just don't do sun)

Are both of your parents still around?
Nah - Ma is, but Dad died back in 1996.

Are they divorced, or still together?
They divorced in 1974 and both went on to remarry two wonderful people.. How do you feel about that? They did what they had to do and we lucked out in that both of my step-parents (Ray & Terri) were good folks.

Automotive engines are measured in “ci's” and “cc's”, What do these abbreviations stand for?
Not sure - cylinders?

Do you think war is necessary?
Sometimes, it's a necessary evil to rectify the mistakes of stupid people.

Are there any monthly magazines that you read regularly or semi-regularly?
Rolling Stone, The Advocate, OUT, Time

At work, do you have pictures of your loved ones displayed in your work area?
Nah - no pics allowed in the small metal box..

Think back five years ago: Did you picture yourself where you are now?
Not really - I figured I'd still be stuck at the Kangaroo and doing that hard time - the here and now (Murphy's) is much better.

What is your favorite type of food by nationality?
Chinese

What event precipitated the creation of the Federal Reserve?
The Great Depression?

Who is your favorite musician (or musical performer) of all time?
My "Big Six" are Alice Cooper, Waylon Jennings, Frank Sinatra, Sublime, Rickie Lee Jones and Soce The Elemental Wizard.

What is so great about them?
They all were / are break through artists who march to their own beat and have a style that stands out and can't be crammed into one certain genre. And they're just damn good!

How many schools, total, have you attended in your whole life?
11

Do you regularly or semi-regularly attend church/temple/mosque/coven or any other kind of religious convention?
Sort of - I do volunteer work at a local church for the Food Bank and am up there every Tuesday afternoon and Thursday morning to help out. And I have a key to the church (go figure), but I don't attend the religious gatherings (Wed. night and Sunday AM) because of differences between my own way of thinking and what they preach in this church. I like the people, but we have philosophical differences and I'd be a major hypocrite to sit there and listen to their sermons feeling the way I do.

How old were you when you stopped believing in Santa Claus?
What about Santa? What are you trying to say? He's still real to me, damn it!

What is the earliest assassination (or attempt) you can remember in your lifetime?
I remember learning about several while growing up, but the first one I remember is John Lennon - and that was sad.

If you are over 21 years old, do you keep anything from your childhood (awards, report cards, toys, drawings, etc)?
I still have all of that stuff - yeppers.

Do you have any idea what the term “Hoffman's Bicycle” refers to?
Not a clue...

Do you know who W.C. Fields was?
A comedic genius from the early 20th century who made great movies and was famous (infamous) for his love of alcohol and his dislike of children.

Are you a registered member of any political party?
Yeah, but that was mainly so I could vote in the local elections and primaries - which seem to be (around here anyhow) dominated by one party. But I vote based on the person and the issues - and not that party.

How do you feel about text messaging/IM's?
They're OK - I'm not big on 'em, but then again, I don't like talking to people anyhow.

Do you enjoy pro sports? And do you have any favorite teams?
I only like one "pro sport" and that's the "King of Sports", pro wrestling...

Did you attend college? If so, did you graduate with a degree and what was it?
I attended classes for a year at Richmod Community College, but never got that degree. I got bored and school was interfering with my work and partying - so I dropped it. I also took correspondence classes for a degree in book-keeping, but that's some boring stuff too - it's so hard to stay motivated and I eventually ended up dropping it as well.

What was the worst job you ever had?
Working at the Kangaroo on 3rd shift. The actual job was OK, but every night was like going into a war zone - it was non-stop chaos for 3 hours straight every night with people trying to steal, arguing and fighting, drunks and bums in the parking lot, and at least 25 things going on at any one time with only one cashier (me) supposed to watch and control everything. I think I aged 25 years in my 4 years there and that's a job I wouldn't wish on anyone for any reason. Thinking back, it's a miracle I was never shot or stabbed - or never killed anyone myself during my time there.

Say you went bear-hunting one day. You start out from camp looking for bears, and you hike 10 miles South; no luck there, so you go 10 miles East. Again, no bears to kill, so you trek 10 more miles to the North. There you find that some jackass bear has destroyed your camp while you were gone. What color was the bear?
That wasn't a bear - that was those damn kids from the other side of the river. I knew they were up to no good - damn brats! Where is my shotgun?

Do you think you usually put other people before yourself?
YES!!

What is your favorite animal?
Cats, of course (as my damn cat sits and glares at me from across the room) - and I think otters and gerbils are pretty cool too.

Have you ever stolen anything from your job?
I'm always snagging pens from that place (accidentially, of course) and my manager keeps threatening to kill me for it... Oops!

What do you think is your worst personality trait?
My procrastination and my sometimes over-powering reluctance to let down the wall and allow people to get close to me - I push them away and if they get close anyhow, I push 'em away harder. I have definite "trust issues" with people, even when I know I shouldn't.

Do you think you are more intelligent or less intelligent than the average person?
I think it depends on the subject - I'm smarter than most in some areas, but I'm a total moron when it comes to others. I'm smarter than the average bear, but when all of the plusses and negatives are figured in, I'm probably just slightly over average.

Is our society in its ascendancy or its decline?
It depends on what you're talking about - for every gain, there is also a loss since one has to make room for the other and it's all about sacrifice anyhow. I personally think that things are falling apart and going backwards from where they need to be, but I'm sure that just as many people can argue the other direction and say that we can't live in the past and it's all about advancement and improvement. So it's a give and take - and let's see what happens.

What is the most important quality you look for in other people?
A sense of humor and a smile - if someone makes me laugh or smile, I can tolerate them far more than I can a sour-puss who does nothing but grate my nerves
