TNA Genesis Preview & Predictions
January 11, 2009
Doug Maynard
Well, I was hoping to have a new edition of "Six Minutes" up today, doing my take on something that Paps talked about a few days ago in a great book review about the "Greatest Rivalries In Wrestling", but when it came time to get up this morning and get to work, I kind of turned over and fell back asleep. So that means no column today. But I'll try to get to that tonight after I get home from work.
As for now, it's the day for the latest TNA PPV offering, it's TNA Genesis 2008. Forgotten all about it, didn't you? I almost did too, but remembered at the last second. Let's just say that the push for this PPV by TNA has been a bit less than overwhelming.
But it's still a PPV and that means predictions. So let's just jump right to it and get busy.
Shane Sewell versus Sheik Abdul Bashir
Daivari is the evil veteran. Sewell is the referee who has been abused and pushed around at every opportunity. Daivari will dominate the match, but we all know that everyone loves the "happy ending", so I'll expect to see Daivari to get over-confident at the end and Sewell will use a small paakage to snatch a victory from the jaws of defeat.
Winner: Shane Sewell
Mick Foley, AJ Styles and Devon versus Kevin Nash, Booker T & Scott Steiner
Mick Foley makes his return to the ring. (yawn) Been there and done that too many times already. This should be a fun match and I'm interested to see how the "TNA Original" and Salty Award winning AJ Styles comes across in this WCW/WWE alumni reunion encounter. I'll go for Foley to do a turn and go over to the Main Event Mafia as he plants Devon to the mat and allows Booker to pick up the win.
Winners: The WWE / WCW Pep Squad Alumni
Jeff Jarrett versus Kurt Angle
This should arguably be the best match of the night. Jeff isn't flashy, but he's a solid worker and the fans are still popping hard for his return to the ring. And Kurt Angle, despite his faults (and the major over-exposure by TNA over the past couple of years), rarely has a bad match. I'll go for shenanigans in this match (TNA loves them some shenanigans) and Kurt steals the win, thus allowing the feud to continue.
Winner: Your Olympic Hero
TNA Knockouts Title Match - Lumberjill Match
Awesome Kong versus TBA (Christy Hemme has been announced by TNA as out with an injury)
Hemme has been announced by TNA as requiring neck surgery,so she's out of the match. The strong speculation is that Taylor Wilde will be stepping up to take her spot and fight Kong. I'd rather see she of the big boobs, ODB, moved into this position. But however it goes and whoever the opponent is, one thing is certain. The Salty Awards winning TNA Knockouts Champion, Awesome Kong, will kick ass and take names and remain the champ. Why? Cause she's just awesome. Why else?
Winner (and Still Champion) Awesome Kong
TNA X-Division Tournament Finals
Alex Shelley versus Chris Sabin
Good match-up. Both guys are talented beyond belief and this is a match that could honestly go either way. These two guys are that good. But I hate the Motor City Machineguns angle and want to see Shelley out again as a singles star. So I'll go for Alex to regain some of that Papparazi flair he used to have (and pull out a few sneaky tactics) to claim that big "X" and win the X Division Championship.
Winner (and New Champ) Alex Shelley
TNA World Tag Team Championship Match
Consequences Creed & Jay Lethal (c) versus Beer Money, Inc. versus Abyss & Matt Morgan
Creed and Lethal won the titles at the Impact! tapings. Yay for them. They had their moment of glory. But look for the Salty Award winning team of Roode and Storm, aka "Beer Money" to come back and take what rightfully belongs to them, those tag team titles. It's a night of retribution as old becomes new and the former champs take home the gold once more.
Winners (and New Champions) James Storm & Robert Roode - Beer Money, Inc.
TNA World Championship Match
Sting versus Rhino
I have a hard time believing that Sting is still the World Champion. I have a even harder time accepting Rhino as the top contender for the belt. It just seems so anti-climatic to me. That being said, Sting wins when Rhino misses a gore. And there you go.
Winner and Still Champion: Sting
Eight Man Elimination Match
Eric Young, Shark Boy & LAX versus Cute Kip, Kiyoshi, Jimmy Rave & Lance Hoyt
Who did LAX piss off to get tossed into this filler match? Look at the names? Kip? Shark Boy? The Rock & Rave Infection? I feel for Homicide and Hernandez, but at least they're on the PPV and are getting a check, right? Let's see - it's elimination rules, so let's eliminate some possible winners. It won't be Kip or Kiyoshi - that's for sure. And Sharky? Well, he bites, so rule him out. Hmmm! Look for Eric and LAX to dominate and decimate and walk over the jabronies on Team Goofy and pull out a big win. And then, to make it fun, LAX will beat the crap out of their partner, Eric Young, to express their displeasure at being put in this thrown-together, filler match. So there you go (again).
Winners: LAX & Eric Young
And that's my take on TNA Genesis 2008.
By the way, the Tossing Salt - Worldwide News 2008 Achievement Awards (aka "The Saltys" are now in the books. Go to www.wrestle-zone.co.uk to check out the columns or else go to my blog at www.myspace.com/salt_palace to see who the crack staff of "Tossing Salt Media, Inc." have determined were the big players of 2008. Two columns for your entertainment. Try it - you'll like it.
And now, I have to go to work. Hopefully, a new "Six Minutes" will be up in the next 36 hours, so look for that.
