Flashback: About Face - Time For A Change - August 28, 2003

About Face - Time For A Change - August 28, 2003

Been thinking alot lately - some people's characters in the WWE just don't suit them right - the characters need a little tweaking to make them live up to their full potential. Some major characters in WWE, who operate as "faces". would make much better heels, and there are a few "heels" that the fans could really get off on cheering. Here's some examples:

Scott Steiner - In WCW, Scott Steiner was a bad ass freak on a constant 'roid rage. He didn't give a damn and you almost expected him to hurt someone for real during his ringside entrances when he'd face off with the fans. He was also way over. Since he's been in WWE, he's a "good guy" and really sucks. His body is broken down and he isn't 1/2 the wrestler he once was. As a good guy, his flaws are obvious. As a bad guy, he's so scary just freaking out on people that you don't notice the missed moves or stiff shots so much. You just think of it as part of the character. A steel pipe to Goldberg's head, or maybe throwing Austin through a wall would be all it would take and Steiner could easily be the most devastating heel on the RAW roster.

HBK and Kevin Nash. - Both their best days are behind them. With HBK, it doesn't matter, because he's stilla top performer when he does wrestle, plus he can get by on just talking if need be. Nash is great at talking too, but he's been trying to wrestle, and his body just won't do it anymore. Team these guys up again (aka HBK and Big Daddy Cool) and let them go work in the tag team division to add life to that quickly self-destructing mess. Give them just a taste of the old attitude -HBK can let Nash build up most of the heat if he doesn't feel comfortable with it - Nash is the man who gave the World title to Hogan, so he's capable of doing anything to get heat - but they would quickly rise to the occasion and give new life to the tag team division. plus give La Res and the Dudds someone to feud with besides each other.

Linda McMahon - the start is already in progress. Ever since day 1, Linda has been viewed as a holier than thou counterpart to the evil Mr.McMahon. She's the voice of reason who can do no wrong - the innocent victim. But what if the victim had enough and started fighting back. She had an encounter with Eric. She denys it.

But what if she comes back in a couple of weeks, after being "betrayed" by Vince yet again, and decides what's good for Vince is good for her. She seduces Eric. She becomes the cold as hell, by the balls bitch I suspect she probably is in real life. She shows her womb is not the only demon infested thing - her soul and heart is - she's mad as hell and everyone is going to pay.

Plus, with Eric - let the dalliance grow into an obsession - let it go from flirting and quickies to a "fatal attraction" thing where he can't get away from her. She's always there - demanding his attention and just making his whole life a walking hell with her sexual harrassment and obsessions. I have a feeling she's going to stick around for a while on McMahon TV, I mean RAW, so let her be funny, and have an impact that her character can have..

On the other side of things - who is "evil", but needs to turn "face"?

Most of the "bad guys" are tweeners these days - there are not many purely bad guys anymore. Triple H and Evolution are, but that's more because of Triple H. Flair gets cheered regardless of whatever he does, because he's Ric Flair, and Orton is just over - and gets plenty of cheers too. But I think that there are a couple of borderline bad guys who could really get over with the fans as faces if done right.

Big Show - it wouldn't be for long, because he's better as McMahon's monster hitman than anything else, really - but in real life, on interviews and TV - Big Show is a great guy. He's a natural comedian and has great timing. Anyone remember the "Showkishi" and "HulkShow" bits he did? Funny as hell. He's been built up as such an ass for so long, that no one would take him seriously as a face, but I'd like to see him try.

Sean O'Haire - I just want to see him back on Smackdown - and I don't care if it's a good guy, bad guy, or whatever. His promos to build him up in the start were fabulous, but now he's still suffering from the fallout of the Roddy Piper situation.

Have him make appearances as a backstage guru type - giving advice - telling people what they ought to do, but not telling them anything they didn't already know. Push him into a feud with Benoit or Rhyno or anyone. He and Eddie and Tajiri still have unresolved issues from way back in the Piper days, so let that be built upon. Just get this man on TV (and I mean Smackdown - not Velocity - no one watches that show)..

Well, those are my opinions and mine alone, but what do ya'll think? Let me know something..

-Doug
